Automated Vehicle Identification (AVI)

The ETC solution is based on Automated Vehicle Identification: the system relies on radio-frequency identification (RFID), where an antenna at the toll gate communicates with a transponder on the vehicle via Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC). The system's RFID tags have excellent accuracy, and can be read at highway speeds thus permitting completely unaided full-speed electronic tolling.

The solution has the potential to electronically debit the accounts of registered car owners providing an automated management and accounting system.
